Matt Costa is a Laguna Beach California songwriter and recording artist, widely known for writing the musical score to the popular documentary film Orange Sunshine and for his close songwriting partnership and on stage performances with long time friend Jack Johnson. After a stint on Brushfire records where he released 4 full length Lps with songs such as “Mr Pitiful” and “Sunshine” achieving massive success, Matt released 2018’s critically lauded Santa Rosa Fangs with Dangerbird records.
His LP Yellow Coat recorded in Los Angeles and produced by Alex Newport, arrived in September 2020. It chronicled a year of personal tumult and change and represents a positive new start for Costa. He followed this with the soundtrack Donde Los Terremotos centered around a film he shot and scored in Oaxaca for Roark.
In the early 2000s Costa was on his way to becoming a professional skateboarder when he was derailed by a serious injury. He changed his focus to his songwriting and an early demo found its way to No Doubt’s Tom Dumont, who ultimately produced Costa’s early recordings.
